Murder and Identity Theft — The Unfortunate death of Sajini Krishnan
The following article includes detailed information about how Sajini Krishnan was murdered and how the accused was not caught for 12 long years due to Identity Theft.
Introduction –
Sajini Krishnan was the second daughter of Mr. Krishnan who was an employee of Calico Mill, and her mother was Mrs. Yamini Krishnan who was a retired bank employee of State bank of India. They were a happy family staying in Ahmedabad. Sajini was a very studious child from a very young age and wanted to do a bank job like her mother. She was a commerce graduate and had a diploma in accountancy. Soon she fulfilled her dream of becoming a bank employee.
Since Sajini had completed her education and started earning enough independently, her parents decided to look for an alliance for her marriage. In November 2002, her marriage was fixed with a man named Tharun Jinaraj.
Tharun Jinaraj’s background –
Tharun Jinaraj was a basketball player and a physical education instructor in Madhya Pradesh. He was the eldest son of Jinaraj and Annamma who were running a business earlier in Kottayam and had later settled in Mandsaur, in Madhya Pradesh. Tharun was passionate about basketball that he did not leave any opportunity regarding matches. In one of the matches that Tharun played he had injured his middle finger very badly to the extent that he cannot bend it anymore. But that injury never stopped him from playing basketball.
Tharun and his younger brother completed their education in Ahmedabad, later on, got a job in Bhopal. Since Tharun was a basketball player as well, he had played many local tournaments and in one of the tournaments, his teammate was a girl. He had become good friends with her, and both were in a love relationship soon.
Tharun was in a relationship for 4 years. His mother did not accept his relationship as the girl he was dating was a Parsi from Gujarat and Tharun’s family was Kerala-based. Thus, Tharun’s mother fixed his marriage with Sajini Krishnan in November 2002. He somehow accepted and was married to Sajini in December 2002. But he was still in contact with her ex-girlfriend even after marriage as he got to know that her marriage was canceled. Tharun even talked about divorce with Sajini, but she refused to accept for divorce, so he had no other option but to live with her.
Sajini’s concern –
Tharun and Sajini had made up their mind and started living off quite well. But, after few days Tharun had started using her income as well. He even turned Sajini’s bank account into a joint account and it was accessible by both. It was concerning her that Tharun is more interested in the money than her. Sajini had even talked to her mother about this issue and her mother had shrugged it off by saying that newlyweds do that and it is normal.
14th February 2003 –
Tharun asks Sajini to celebrate Valentine’s Day by inviting his younger brother to his home that evening. Sajini accepts that even though she was getting ready to leave for her office. After talking with Sajini, Tharun leaves the house at 7.30 am. While leaving out of the house he even meets his neighbors and talks to them for few minutes about him inviting his brother over.
Tharun reaches his brother’s home and invites him, talks with him for some time, and then goes back home. When he returned home, he saw that the door was left open and things at his house were chaotic, he saw that the bedroom door was also left open and went inside only to find out the dead body of his wife! He also sees that his wife’s gold necklace is on the bed and some cash is also on the bed. It was kept there by Sajini as she was packing her things to get on a business trip the next day, i.e., 15th February 2003.
Shocked Tharun cries over and neighbors rush to his house and he even faints due to nervous shock. Neighbors call the police and family members of both Tharun and Sajini. The police arrive and temporarily suspect that it might be a robbery case. But soon they concluded that if it had been a case of robbery then there should not have been any cash or gold left in the house which was not the case. No cash or gold was missing, thus, it is not a case of robbery but murder.
Sajini’s body is taken to the hospital and Tharun is also taken as he had fainted. After Tharun wakes up he starts crying again for his dead wife. He is sent home by the police so that they could conduct a smooth autopsy with the dead body. The police find out through doctors that Sajini had been strangled by her dupatta which led to choking and death.
16th February 2003 — Tharun is nowhere to be found –
On 16th February 2003, police visit the crime scene only to find that Tharun was missing. The police had kept looking for him but still were not able to find him. Through investigations, they had found that Tharun had withdrawn all the money from the joint account on the morning of 15th February 2003. Neighbors confirmed that they had not seen Tharun since the time he left the house on 15th in the morning.
The case is left as an unsolved case and 12 years pass by when unexpectedly a newly appointed D.C.P. finds the whereabouts of Tharun by re-opening this unsolved case.
D.C.P. Deepan — finds about Identity Theft –
He is newly appointed in 2015 and goes through the various unsolved case files when he comes across Sajini’s case. He finds out that if a person is not being able to be traced out by the police, then surely, he is living under identity theft. Identity theft means using another person’s identity fraudulently.
D.C.P. Deepan finds out the whereabouts of Tharun’s mother Annamma. D.C.P. Deepan tracks Annamma’s mobile and even sent two police officers to stay for rent in the same building as Annamma for finding information quickly. The police under the instructions of the D.C.P. even carry out a census to find out information about Annamma from her neighbors.
After doing investigations, it was revealed that Annamma’s husband, i.e., Tharun’s father had died in the year 2009 and since then Annamma had been living alone. She had regularly visited Bangalore to meet her niece, Nisha.
Annamma’s niece Nisha was a married woman and had two kids. Nisha’s husband was Pravin Bhateley. Police had tapped Annamma’s mobile phone and through that, they had found out that she will regularly call and received calls from two numbers — one is Nisha’s number and another one was from the company named Oracle. Police find out that the number from Oracle company was from the desk of an employee named Pravin Bhateley who was no one else but Nisha’s husband.
Police carry out background verification of Pravin Bhateley and reveal that a person named Pravin Bhateley lives in Ahmedabad. He is a physical education instructor in Ahmedabad.
For further evidence, D.C.P. Deepan orders the police to go through Nisha’s social media handles. The report reveals that Nisha had posted photos of her children, herself, and even her relatives but had never posted even a single photo of her husband Pravin. It is also revealed that Nisha is not Annamma’s niece.
D.C.P. Deepan orders Inspector Kiran Chaudhary to verify the person named Pravin Bhateley in Bangalore. Inspector Chaudhary steps into the office of Oracle and requests to meet Pravin Bhateley who was a senior manager. As soon as Inspector Chaudhary meets Pravin, he greets him with a handshake and tries to bend Pravin’s middle finger which he is not able to do so. Immediately Inspector Chaudhary greets Pravin as, “Hello Tharun Jinaraj, I am inspector Kiran Chaudhary.” Tharun Jinaraj who had done an identity theft of a person named Pravin Bhateley is immediately arrested and taken to Ahmedabad.
Who is the real Pravin Bhateley?
On 15th February 2003, Tharun Jinaraj goes to the house of his college friend Pravin Bhateley and requests him that he is looking for a job and needs a place to stay. The innocent Pravin lets his friend Tharun stay at his home. Slowly Tharun starts stealing documents of Pravin which are mostly related to the identification. Tharun applies for a passport in the name of Pravin and even completes verification at Pravin’s home. He stays at his friend’s home for three months and completes collecting all the necessary documents to pose himself as Pravin Bhateley. The real Pravin, who is Tharun’s friend has no knowledge of the fraudulent acts of Tharun.
Tharun Jinaraj who is no longer Tharun as per legal documents gets a job in Pune. He shifts to Pune and starts working. There he meets Nisha who is working in an IT company, and they get married. According to Nisha, Tharun is Pravin Bhateley as she has no knowledge of his fraudulent acts. The proof that Tharun’s identity theft was so strong is that he even traveled abroad thrice using the passport which says that he is Pravin Bhateley and not Tharun Jinaraj.
Who killed Sajini?
Tharun was the real culprit. He killed Sajini to gift her dead body to his ex-girlfriend (A psychopath! Who gifts a dead body?). On 14th February 2003, at 7.30 am Tharun leaves his house. He intentionally spoke to his neighbors to create eye witness stating that he definitely left the house. Tharun comes inside the house through the back door and enters the bedroom. He strangles Sajini’s throat using a dupatta and holds it tight until she chokes and dies.
After killing Sajini, Tharun throws few items in his house here and there to make it seem as if there was a robbery. He goes to his brother’s house after doing all this and invites his brother. After coming back home he creates a scene as if he is shocked and calls out the neighbors by crying out loud.
The same evening after coming back from the hospital, Tharun calls his ex-girlfriend and informs her that he had kept a valentine’s day gift for her, the dead body of his wife. The shocked ex-girlfriend immediately cuts off all the contact with Tharun as she was terrified and did not want to get involved in any issues. She promises to not disclose the murder to anyone.
Tharun Jinaraj arrested –
After the completion of all the investigations with the efforts made by D.C.P. Deepan and Inspector Kiran Chaudhary, it is concluded that Sajini Krishnan’s murder was committed by her own husband Tharun Jinaraj. He was arrested and still trials are going on.
